A rare Italian gunner's stiletto, ca. 1650, with its original iron sheath. The blade of triangular section with incremented markings used for the measurement of cannon bores. Turned iron bolster, olive-shaped pommel with flat baluster and undisturbed peen. Horn grip of basically rounded square section, decorated with bone inlays, tiny brass nails and longitudinal grooves which originally contained wire inlays, no longer extant. Bronze ferrule open at the seam but still present. Artfully filed bronze crossguard with flared finials. Overall good original untouched condition with age wear; two bone inlays missing, the scabbard distressed but intact, the crossguard displaying looseness. Iron components with dark rust patina. Gunners' stilettos are rare are the scabbards are far rarer. Overall in sheath 37.8 cm., blade 25.7 cm. incl. bolster.
