Item #: BQ928 -- Fine Gendai Katana by Highly Rated WWII Swordsmith (Kunitada) -- $4450.00
A fine WWII-period shin gunto with gendai blade made by Okimoto Kunitada (Osaka) and dated the 2006th year of the foundation of the empire. Kunitada was one of the best swordsmiths of the Showa period. He was awarded National Swordsmith, 1st seat status at the 1941 Newly-Made Japanese Swords Exhibition; see Slough, "Modern Japanese Swordsmiths," p. 215. The blade is very healthy and in good condition with very light scuffs and rust. The mune has one small dent from a shrapnel hit to the saya. This could be peened or polished out but it is an honest record of the sword's use in war and does not harm the sword's value. The hamon is wide, up to 1/2", with much activity in suguha with notari and gunome. Original saya, freshly and properly restored. This blade will be a masterpiece when polished. 33 15/16" total blade length, 24 7/8" nagasa.
