This fine rifle is the short two band version which saw use during the Crimean war and was imported to the Confederacy in large quantity during the early years of the American Civil War. It has a .577 cal. rifled barrel with various inspection stamps. The lock is stamped with Crowned VR and "TOWER 1856." The stock carries both the WD broad arrow, "WINBURN" and "I. JOHNSON" stamps. Belgian contract barrel with Liege proofs, later style hammer. Original ramrod; the rear sling swivel is missing. Fine original period condition, possibly refurbished at the Pimlico factory, with scattered minor surface rust and stock dents and scratches. 102 cm. overall.
