The tang signed, "Sashu ju Masauji." This is Hawley's Mas1264, listed on p. 423; he may be the only Showa smith from Satsuma. With navy officer's kai gunto tsuka. The saya with the original iron hanger; the lacquer has been professionally restored. When obtained from the vet's family the sword had torn remnants of a black leather cover over a lacquered saya. May have been carried by a land-based naval officer. Ubu nakago with one mekugi ana. The blade with shallow gunome midare hamon, having a few light scuffs, surface oxidization and tiny rust spots. 65.3 cm. nagasa.
