A 20th Century Dayak Mandau with hardwood handle carved with traditional Dayak motifs and adorned with red, white and black hair, probably of human origin. The grip of woven wire, terminated with typical gum cap. The blade of standard convex/concave form, plainly forged and blackened at the forte. Two-piece hardwood sheath bound with bands of white and black dyed rattan, with large delicately woven panels and elegant carving at the toe and beneath the throat. The reverse with bark sleeve for the piso raut, decorated at the bottom with multicolored hair. The sheath retaining its woven hanging lanyard including an added length of fabric with carved wooden bauble. With piso raut (rattan knife) usually lacking (the blade bound to the handle with wire in similar fashion to the grip). The blade with superficial surface rust -- will clean very well with steel wool and oil. Overall GC; the handle with a small chip to the underside, the sheath with a small area of wood loss at the bottom. The blade 43.5 cm., overall in sheath approx. 67 cm.
