Item #: 10-3704 -- A Fine WW2 Period Japanese Shin-Gunto Army Officer's Mounted Katana, signed, "Mantetsu Kitae Tsukuru Kore," with Zodiac Date -- $2500.00

A fine WW2 period Japanese shin-gunto army officer's katana, signed, "Mantetsu Kitae Tsukuru Kore" with Mukden (Tan) stamp and having an uncommon zodiac date. The date reads, "Showa Mizunoto Hitsuji Haru," i.e. 1943. The blade is housed in a plain wooden shirasaya with the original silver-plated brass habaki. Excellent polish with a well controlled medium suguha hamon and some very minor surface scratches. In addition to the above the original shin-gunto army mounts are included in this offering. A matching tsunagi (wooden blade) was made to keep this koshirae intact. Mantetsu blades have had a great reputation since the WW2 period as very fine cutters; one was surrendered by Japanese General Tomoto near the end of the war and is currently in the National Army Museum in London. This is a wonderful offering. Blade nagasa 67cm.
