Early 19th C. French Epee - $

Early 19th c. French epee known as the Gardes Francaise model, c.1800 (see Aries, 4 fascicle, 1967, figs.16-20). Favored by staff officers of the Consulate period up to 1803. Total length 37 3/4", blade 31 1/4" long, with a single wide fuller in the upper part, on both sides, 13" long. The blade is single-edged down to the end of the fullers, double-edged and tapering to a point in the lower half. The hilt is made of cast brass with a wooden grip covered with intricately braided brass wire. All parts original, the hilt has been tightened in the past and the pommel is very slightly out of line. This is one of the rarest early Napoleonic swords. No scabbard. Condition: Fine to medium pitting on the blade with some larger pits near the point; light cleaning scratches on the hilt, otherwise nice patina; the dish a little loose; some wire missing near the base of the grip with a couple of short loose ends.
