A European (Italian?) Rapier, ca. 1640 - $

A European rapier, ca. 1640, possibly Italian, with Fine blade of flattened diamond section, embellished at the forte with sunbursts and pennanted lances and inscribed in the fullers "FREDERICO * PICHINIO," a corrupted attribution to the well-known bladesmith Fredrico Piccinino of Milan, son of Antonio, working 1550-1580. Norman type 109 hilt, elaborately chiseled in deep relief with animal and vegal motifs including a serpent-head rear quillon finial. Overall fine condition, grip rewrapped, blade reseated. Blade with minor areas of delamination and scattered pits. Blade 80.5 cm., overall 93.9 cm.
