A Rare English Dish-hilt Rapier, ca. 1630 - $
6850.00
A good original English dish-hilt rapier or FLAMBERGE. The shallow guard pierced and chiseled in detailed relief in a motif involving acanthus leaves. Slightly ovate, globular pommel with baluster button and turned base, chiseled in relief in a motif matching the guard; the quillon block having a similar leaf pattern. The quillons branching with bulbous finials with conical termini. The straight grip appears to present the original binding over a wooden core carved in a chevron pattern, terminating in narrow turks' heads. The blade incised in the short fullers "M A R I A," and "I N R I I." Long double-edged blade of flattened diamond section, conservatively polished and very sharp. A very uncommon pattern of fine quality. Overall excellent condition; blade showing excellent grain and forging flaws, all metal components showing fine color and patina. Blade 108 cm., 124 cm.
