An Rare English Transitional Rapier, ca. 1630-1640 - $
5500.00
A good early English transitional rapier of the English Civil War period with single-edged blade incorporating a short false edge and slightly hollow-ground ricasso of rectangular section. Stepped flattened spheroid pommel with baluster button and turned base, quillons with thick disk termini and knucklebow with matching central appointment. The bars of the hilt finely fluted, including the functional, outwardly recurved pas d'anes. Heavily embossed shallow bilobate cup-type guard, well-fitted, with an unusual inwardly scrolled member to each side. The elongated quillon block with central chevrons terminated by pellets. The grip of rectangular section, retaining the original copper wire binding with turks' head termini. An excellent and fine original sword with untouched pommel peen and lovely chocolate brown patina throughout. Blade 89.3 cm., overall 106 cm.
