# 1001-21 - An English Mourning Smallsword with Cut-steel Hilt, ca. 1780 - $ 800.00

An English mourning sword, late 18th century. The hilt decorated with faceted steel studs and filework. Slightly concaved, pierced, ovate guard with faceted steel studs and scalloped edge to the interior surface. Neoclassical urn-shaped pommel with faceted baluster button, the grip with faceted ferrules. The rear quillon with disk finial in the plane of the guard. Robust fighting blade of hollow-ground triangular section. The hilt japanned black; the blade may have also been blackened originally. Overall VG; the blade crisp with very fine peppering, several of the small studs missing from the hilt. Blade 85 cm., overall 97.5 cm.
