4250.00
A Spanish main gauche, i.e. left-hand parrying dagger, ca. 1700. Slender blade of square section, with fine filework and piercings, thumbrest and incised decor at the obverse forte. Typical sail-type guard, incised with symmetrical floral patterns and central motif involving a crucifix flanked by a sword and quill pen. Long quillons with gentle swell, terminating in bulbous finials with filed appointments. The grip of helically carved wood with copper wire binding terminated by turks' heads. The pommel of circular plan and lenticular profile, with robust baluster button. Overall excellent condition, the grip possibly original; a minor area of delamination to the blade at the reverse ricasso. Blade 50.2 cm., overall approx. 63.5 cm.
