A Spanish Colonial Rapier, ca. 1700 - $

A Spanish Southwestern colonial rapier, incorporating an imported European blade, ca. late 17th or early 18th century. Bilobate shell guard, incised with foliage within kidney-shaped panels. The hilt incorporating a knucklebow with filed central appointment, pas d'anes secured to the guard with two screws, fluted quillon blocks and a single rear quillon. Flattened spherical pommel with baluster button. Original grip of twisted brass wire with iron ferrules and four longitudinal straps exhibiting decorative filework. The pommel and quillon with incised vegetal decoration. Fine, long slender blade, marked in the short fullers "+ ME FECIT+" AND "+SOLINGEN+"; the latter mostly indistinct. Overall fine condition with excellent consistent color, patina and form. The lower part of the blade an expert restoration, blade possibly reseated.
