A good and rare Japanese Guruwa, or neck defense, from the Galeno Collection and as featured in the book noted below, the page of which is found in the lower photo. "Neck defenses of this type were worn on occasion in various periods. This example is of two pieces of russet steel, black lacquered internally, hinged on the left, and fastening with a turn button on the right. Many examples have sections of scales, or plates, laced to the front lower edge to extend the protection, forming a kind of nodowa."* This example is 3" tall x 5 ½" O/D.
